How Can Sustainable Organic Agricultural Techniques Combat AMR

This webinar will present a program level talk on AMR as it pertains to plant agriculture and how sustainable organic agricultural techniques including but not limited to crop modification can combat it. The event is for 60 minutes on Friday 26 September 2025, 10:30AM - 11:30AM ET l 7:30AM - 8:30AM PT | 8:00PM - 9:00PM IST. This event is the second in a series of events organized by the MSSRF-UofG working group and hosted by CIRCLE.

Sérgio holds a Master of Science in Engineering from Wayne State University (Michigan, USA) and a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Windsor (Ontario, Canada).  Sérgio began his career as an engineer working in Research and Development with industry, where he authored several patents and supported automotive design and manufacturing projects throughout Canada, USA, Mexico and Japan.  Sérgio worked for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for 7 years in Southwest Ontario before joining the Office of Intellectual Property and Commercialization at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC).  For 5 years, Sérgio owned and operated a successful consulting Information Technology (IT) business where he virtually managed a team of global software specialists.  Currently, Sergio is a Director with the Science and Technology Branch (STB) with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada managing Research, Development and Technology for AAFC research centres located in Southern Ontario and the Technology Transfer office in Guelph, Ontario.  He is the Director lead for STB’s National One Health Portfolio, a member of the International Joint Commission (IJC) Science Advisory Board (SAB) Research Coordination Committee (RCC).  He represents AAFC on several committees, as AAFC’s federal government representative or observer, which include groups such as the Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario (ARIO), Vineland Innovation Advisory Council, Ontario Critical Plant Pest Management Council (OCPPMC).  He STB’s cluster director lead for the Swine Cluster and Poultry Cluster (SCAP 2023 to 2028).

Former Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), India

Prof. N. Punniamurthy, former Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology (TANUVAS), has executed since 2002 a translational research approach to assess, innovate, experiment and integrate clinically effective Ethnoveterinary herbal remedies (based on traditional siddha principles) against Mastitis, FMD, LSD and a score of other conditions in a stand-alone mode without synthetic chemicals. He secured funds from Tamil Nadu state, ICAR, and DST for ethnoveterinary medicine (EVM) research. He has trained over a hundred thousand farmers for self-reliance in primary health care of cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, and poultry. Since 2001, he has been working as a translational scientist integrating Indian traditional herbal knowledge into veterinary curriculum. He is an international expert for antibiotic-free milk, meat, egg production obtained through traditional herbal medicine for treatment and prevention of livestock diseases and help solve AMR issues. He has been the Indian expert in EVM to the Netherlands, Portugal, Ethiopia and Uganda under the Indo-Dutch exchange programme. He has been received several awards including the Fellow, Indian Society for Buffalo Development” (ISBD) 2023; Dairy Innovators - Lifetime Achievement Award by Dairy Connect 2023; Best EVP-Veterinarian of India Award on World Veterinary Day by IVA 2022; Lifetime Achievement Award - Indian Veterinary Association 2019, among others.
