Shreya Sangai
I look at the non-fictional comics/graphic novels that show individual and community histories of displacement and migration. I borrow theoretical inputs from sociology and history and extend them to comics theories to shift the reader's lens about temporality and spatialities of migration.
Through CIRCLE, I would love to mobilize comics/graphic novels as powerful, upcoming texts that keenly study diasporas and the debates about assimilation, integration, and individual autonomy. While comics are considered cheap, bawdy, vulgar objects, they have been drawing academic attention for the last thirty years, if not more. Comic artists also increasingly embrace academic nuance and contradictions when documenting the narrative. Through CIRCLE, I hope to find similarly interested scholars to share my work with and learn from.
