Josie Wittmer

My work broadly uses waste and waste labour as a lens through which to explore the manifestation of power and various inequalities in urban development and governance from the everyday experiences of women living and working in the urban margins. My dissertation research used a feminist mixed-methods approach to investigate solid waste management and informal recycling practices in the city of Ahmedabad, India with a focus on women waste pickers’ everyday experiences of wellbeing, work, and organizing through a moment of change in the governance of waste in urban India.
